SIERRA VISTA ELEMENTARY CLASSROOM BLOCK EXPANSION

Albuquerque, New Mexico

Nestled in Albuquerque’s Paradise Hills neighborhood, Sierra Vista Elementary School’s new classroom block marks the first phase of a three-phase master plan to renew one of the area’s oldest campuses. The original 1960s-era school had reached the limits of its aging infrastructure, relying on portable classrooms to accommodate growing enrollment. The new addition provides a safe, welcoming, and modern learning environment that reflects the community’s deep roots while embracing a forward-looking vision for education.

SMPC’s design replaces temporary structures with a compact, two-story classroom building that anchors the campus and establishes a new sense of identity. The brick masonry exterior draws inspiration from the area’s distinctive Basalt lava rock formations and nearby petroglyphs, grounding the building in its desert context. Within, classrooms are organized into paired grade-level neighborhoods, fostering collaboration and connection among students. Recessed entry alcoves transform traditional corridors into gallery walls—spaces to gather, celebrate, and showcase student work.

Large operable windows throughout the building fill classrooms with daylight, fresh air, and framed views of the Sandia Mountains and the west side escarpment. Upstairs collaboration zones extend learning beyond the classroom, offering panoramic vistas that encourage reflection and creativity. Sited strategically, the new structure shapes a central courtyard and clarifies campus circulation, setting the framework for future phases of renewal without disrupting current operations.

This first phase not only modernizes Sierra Vista Elementary but also reaffirms its enduring relationship with the surrounding community. Thoughtful design, attention to context, and a commitment to flexible, student-centered spaces ensure that the school will continue to serve generations of learners with pride and purpose.
