UNM Reveals Design for the Humanities & Social Sciences Building
The University of New Mexico recently shared the emerging design for the new Humanities & Social Sciences Complex, developed by Tsien Studio and SMPC. Our work together on this important project continues to be an enriching experience for our team at SMPC. Working closely with Billie Tsien and her colleagues has fostered an inspiring exchange of ideas about architecture, culture, and the role of the humanities on campus. The collaboration has strengthened our shared commitment to careful listening, engagement with the university community, and the thoughtful shaping of spaces that support academic life.
From the outset, the work has been guided by a close study of place, looking to the architectural traditions and landscapes that shape the university and the region. The emerging design brings together multiple academic programs while creating spaces that support conversation, collaboration, and the many ways students and faculty learn, gather, and exchange ideas. Interior and outdoor environments are carefully connected to light, landscape, and the everyday life of campus. Construction is anticipated to begin in August 2026 with completion targeted for Spring 2029.
