As the largest building under one roof in Albuquerque — and the largest mattress factory in the world — the Tempur-Pedic Production Facility defines industrial scale through precision, efficiency, and architectural clarity. Located on a 50-acre site along Albuquerque’s West Mesa, the 800,000-square-foot facility anchors the company’s global manufacturing network and stands as New Mexico’s second-largest non-government building, surpassed only by Intel’s Rio Rancho campus.

SMPC Architects provided planning and design services for this landmark project, coordinating with a multidisciplinary team that included Bohannan Huston, Chavez-Grieves Consulting Engineers, and Bridgers & Paxton. The facility’s program accommodates high-volume manufacturing, warehouse and distribution functions, automated production lines, and office and support spaces. Interior heights range from 25 to 45 feet to support diverse manufacturing processes and material flow.

Architecturally, the building’s form and materials respond directly to its desert setting near Albuquerque’s Nine Mile Hill. The exterior envelope combines insulated concrete panels and insulated metal panels in natural, earth-toned hues that echo the surrounding mesa. The composition balances mass and refinement, reinforcing the building’s industrial purpose while grounding it visually within the landscape. Inside, durable materials—insulated concrete and masonry partitions—define a highly functional, adaptable production environment.

The sheer scale of the project introduced significant construction challenges. The laydown yard sat nearly half a mile from the structure, requiring close coordination and resource management. More than 19,000 cubic yards of concrete and 100 truckloads of structural steel were used to complete the building amid a national steel shortage, demanding creative scheduling and logistics to maintain progress.

In 2017, SMPC again supported Tempur-Pedic through planning and design services to renovate portions of the production floor for a new, specialized manufacturing component dedicated to pillow production. This expansion reinforced the facility’s adaptability and long-term operational resilience, aligning architectural and process design to meet evolving production goals.
