NEW MEXICO SCHOOL FOR THE ARTS
DORMITORY (PHASE IIB)

The student dormitory at the New Mexico School for the Arts completes the next phase of the campus transformation, providing a dedicated residential environment for students traveling from across the state. Designed to support both independence and community, the 20,000-square-foot facility houses up to 60 students within a setting that is safe, welcoming, and closely connected to the academic and arts programs.

Sited to complete the enclosure of the central courtyard, the dormitory reinforces the campus framework established in the earlier cafeteria phase. The building helps define the courtyard as a cohesive outdoor room while maintaining clear connections to the Paseo and surrounding campus spaces. This relationship strengthens the sense of community and provides students with immediate access to shared indoor and outdoor environments.

The design balances durability, comfort, and supervision, creating a residential experience tailored to high school students. Shared spaces encourage interaction and peer connection, while private rooms offer retreat and focus. Material selections and building systems prioritize longevity and ease of maintenance, supporting the school’s long-term operational needs.

As part of a broader adaptive reuse strategy, the dormitory extends the life of the existing campus while minimizing resource consumption. The project reflects a continued partnership with NMSA and Klinger Constructors, building on the success of earlier phases to deliver a cohesive and fully realized campus environment.
