NEW MEXICO SCHOOL FOR THE ARTS
CAFETERIA + COURTYARD (PHASE IIA)

The cafeteria and courtyard at the New Mexico School for the Arts establish a new center of gravity for a campus formed through adaptive reuse of the historic Sanbusco Market Center. Designed as part of a phased expansion, this project transforms a previously fragmented layout into a cohesive environment centered on gathering, performance, and daily student life.

Early engagement with students, faculty, and leadership identified a clear need for spaces that support connection and creative expression. The design responds by positioning the cafeteria as a flexible, multi-purpose venue—equally suited for meals, performances, and informal gatherings. Large expanses of glass and operable walls open directly to a newly defined courtyard, allowing interior and exterior spaces to function as one.

A key move in the project was the transformation of the campus circulation spine, known as the Paseo. Previously enclosed and opaque, the corridor is reimagined with new glazing and improved visibility, bringing daylight deep into the building and reinforcing intuitive movement across campus. The courtyard, framed by the cafeteria and surrounding academic spaces, becomes an outdoor room that supports social interaction, informal learning, and school events.

Delivered within the constraints of an active campus and limited funding, the project required a highly strategic approach to phasing. The cafeteria was constructed as a warm shell, enabling immediate use while allowing future completion of kitchen and interior elements as additional funding became available. Close coordination with Klinger Constructors ensured minimal disruption to ongoing school operations while navigating the complexities of a building shaped by more than a century of incremental additions.
