EAST MOUNTAIN SCHOOL

Set within the rugged landscape of the eastern slope of the Sandia Mountains, East Mountain School’s campus expansion strengthens the identity of its close-knit community while expanding access to its academic program. The project introduces a new Middle School to the existing High School campus, increasing enrollment from 350 to 750 students and reinforcing the school’s connection to place.

The design extends the architectural language of the current campus while drawing inspiration from U.S. Forest Service buildings and regional mountain lodges. Simple forms, articulated rooflines, and durable materials respond to the scale and character of the surrounding landscape. The result is a contemporary interpretation of mountain vernacular — grounded, welcoming, and distinctly rooted in its setting.

Organized around the existing Green Commons and portal, the new Middle School reinforces the campus’s primary circulation spine and preserves expansive mountain views. At its heart, a multipurpose performance and cafeteria space serves as the building’s social anchor — a shared gathering place for meals, assemblies, and events. A centrally located Learning Commons and flexible classrooms support collaborative, inquiry-based learning while strengthening connections across the campus community.

Together, the expansion creates a cohesive, forward-looking educational environment shaped by landscape, community, and tradition.

Construction is expected to be complete and ready for the fall semester of the 2027-2028 academic year.
