BEAR CANYON RESIDENCE
Albuquerque, New Mexico

Albuquerque, New Mexico
This residential renovation was conceptualized by A-Squadra, with SMPC as Architect of Record, and constructed by James Barb Construction. SMPC coordinated construction documentation, specifications, consultant disciplines and permitting.
The renovation transforms a dark and uninspired suburban home in northeast Albuquerque into a unique and inviting light-filled sanctuary. The home is located adjacent to hiking and biking trails in the foothills of the Sandia Mountains. It was dated and drab, with a split-level entry and steep vaulted ceiling that created awkward, inefficient spaces without flow or continuity. An opaque back wall severed any connection from the interior to the backyard.
The design solution revised the back of the building, expanding the footprint and creating a stronger connection to the backyard. The new asymmetrical all-glass facade seamlessly blends the indoors and outdoors, flooding the interior with natural light. The landscaping of the backyard was designed to compliment the interior aesthetic. The second floor was also enlarged, and a new balcony was added, providing an exceptional private view of the Sandia Mountains. The resulting renovation yields a contemporary and inviting oasis that engages the exceptional context of its surroundings.
