Set on a 90-acre site on Albuquerque’s Westside, Volcano Vista High School is one of the largest educational facilities undertaken by Albuquerque Public Schools. The 486,000-square-foot campus was designed to accommodate 2,200 students, with the ability to expand for up to 2,750. Organized around the academy model of Small Learning Communities, the school includes specialized classroom wings, a performing arts center, full athletic facilities, a library/media center, and decentralized commons that foster connection and collaboration.
The master plan was shaped by two driving goals: to relieve severe overcrowding at neighboring schools and to establish a flagship campus that would serve as both a high school and a hub for the surrounding community. The design responds with a central circulation spine linking academic wings to shared resources, a site strategy that maximizes daylighting in all classrooms, and a layout that supports adaptability for future instructional models. Community use was integral to the program—spaces such as the gymnasium, media center, and performing arts venues were designed to seamlessly serve neighborhood events outside of school hours.
Delivering a facility of this scale required thoughtful phasing and rigorous coordination. Construction was divided into four projects—site development, the ninth-grade academy, upper academies, and the arts/performing arts facilities—allowing the school to open in stages while meeting urgent enrollment needs. Careful cost control and standardized building systems helped maintain an economical benchmark of $191 per square foot. Complex site conditions, including excavation of more than 50,000 tons of basalt, were addressed through creative engineering solutions, with portions of the stone incorporated back into the landscape design.
The result is a high school that balances innovation with practicality, sustainability with economy, and large-scale efficiency with small-scale community. Daylit classrooms, energy-efficient systems, xeric landscaping, and recycled materials support long-term performance and stewardship. Most importantly, the design creates a place where students, educators, and the wider Westside community come together to learn, perform, and thrive.
