APS DURANES EARLY CHILDHOOD CENTER

The Duranes Early Childhood Center (ECC) is a transformative project designed as a prototype to support the growth of the Albuquerque Public Schools, Early Childhood Development program.  Located in the historic Los Duranes community, a culturally rich neighborhood, the ECC seamlessly integrates into its surroundings of the middle Rio Grande valley.

The ECC prioritizes a child-centered design, creating an environment that supports physical, cognitive, and emotional growth for preschool children aged 3 to 4. Safety and security are paramount, ensuring a nurturing atmosphere with controlled access and accident-prevention measures.

The project incorporates sustainable design strategies, emphasizing energy efficiency, eco-friendly materials, and a strong connection to nature. Adaptable learning spaces allow for evolving educational approaches, ensuring long-term viability and responsiveness to changing needs.

Thoughtful technology integration supports learning while maintaining a balance with human interaction. The design aligns with APS School Design Standards and the APS Prototype Kit of Parts for Early Childhood Education.

Beyond serving as an educational facility, the ECC functions to support the school community through the APS wrap-around programs.  The design incorporates before and after school programs, food programs, family support and counseling services.

Currently under construction, the Duranes Early Childhood Center plans be completed in the fall of 2026.
