ALBUQUERQUE INTERNATIONAL SUNPORT TERMINAL IMPROVEMENT PROJECTS

Albuquerque, New Mexico

Serving travelers since 1965, the Albuquerque International Sunport is a cultural landmark and a gateway to New Mexico. After decades of continuous use and a major expansion in 1985, the terminal required significant renovation to address industry changes, passenger needs, and the wear of time.

SMPC led a comprehensive renovation of the pre-security areas, including Level 1 Baggage and exterior Arrivals, as well as Level 2 Ticketing and exterior Departures. The project emphasized modernization while honoring the terminal’s distinct regional character. Enhancements to passenger wayfinding, circulation, and comfort were paired with system upgrades to HVAC, lighting, and data infrastructure, resulting in a refreshed experience for visitors and residents alike.

The design introduced new ticket counter casework, stepped ceilings, soffit beams, faux skylights, and a large video wall in the Ticketing Lobby. At the baggage level, improvements included a welcome desk, new passenger gathering areas, custom seating, and a meditation room, all framed by architectural details that reinforce circulation. Updated wayfinding signage and new furnishings complete the revitalized interior.

Executing the renovation within an active airport required careful coordination. The team worked closely with the Aviation Department and Flintco Construction to maintain full operations and uncompromised security throughout construction. This collaborative approach ensured minimal disruption while delivering a significant transformation of the passenger experience.
