CNM AT Tops Out as Project Moves Closer to Completion

The recent topping out of the Transportation Technology Center at RioTECH marks an important milestone for both construction progress and a shared vision for education in Rio Rancho.

Hosted by Franken Construction, the event brought together project team members of SMPC, Central New Mexico Community College (CNM), Rio Rancho Public Schools (RRPS), and the subcontractors and tradespeople whose work is shaping the building every day.

This 43,800-square-foot facility is the result of a unique partnership between CNM and RRPS. The project is designed to expand access to hands-on, dual-credit education by allowing high school students to integrate academic coursework with college-level technical training. Adult learners will also have access to the same programs, creating a more connected and flexible learning environment.

Purpose-built labs will emulate real-world repair environments for automotive, electric vehicle, and diesel technologies. Each lab is supported by adjacent classrooms, clear visibility for instruction and safety, and direct connections between teaching and hands-on learning. The approach is focused on removing barriers to training while aligning education with regional workforce needs.

The topping out celebration highlighted the people making that vision possible. Franken Construction Superintendent Brian Cruz recognized the strength of the team and the quality of work on site. A raffle for subcontractors, featuring tools and gift cards, offered a moment of appreciation for the crews building the project day by day.

Construction is progressing smoothly and is on track for completion ahead of the Fall 2026 term.

As the structure comes into full form, the project reflects more than progress. It represents expanded opportunity for students, stronger connections between education and industry, and a shared investment in the future of skilled trades.
